Common English mistakes Burmese speakers make, and how to fix them
If your first language is Burmese, your English mistakes follow Burmese grammar and sounds — no tense endings, no articles or plurals, one pronoun for he and she, tones instead of stress, and syllables that end softly. Transfer, not carelessness, and each one has a clear fix.
The big ones. 1) Final consonants dropped or swallowed: "ca" for "cat", "boo" for "book" — release the last sound. 2) No tense change: "yesterday I go" → "went"; "I eat already" (pyi) → "I've eaten". 3) "Have many people" (shi) → "There are many people". 4) He/she mixed ("thu" is gender-neutral): "My mother… he" → "she". 5) Missing articles and plurals: "I bought book", "two car" → "a book", "two cars". 6) "I very like" → "I really like"; "open/close the light" (phwint/peik) → "turn on/off". 7) Yes/no reversed on negative questions: "You don't like it?" — "Yes" (meaning no) → "No, I don't". 8) Questions without inversion: "You go where?" → "Where are you going?". 9) Sounds: /r/ as /j/ or /l/ ("yice", "lice" for "rice"), /v/ as /b/ or /w/ ("bideo", "wery"), and /ʃ/ as /s/ ("sip") — tongue tip up and back for /r/, teeth on the lip for /v/, round the lips for "sh". 10) Stress: English needs one loud, long syllable per word — "comPUter", "imPORtant" — not even, tone-shaped syllables.
A list won't fix these; making them out loud and being corrected in the moment will. Airi is built for that: she hears the pattern, fixes the one mistake that matters in her reply, and keeps the conversation going. Speak with her daily and these stop being habits within a few weeks.
