Common English mistakes Ukrainian speakers make, and how to fix them
If your first language is Ukrainian, your English mistakes follow Slavic grammar and a set of false friends that look completely safe. Transfer, not carelessness — and each one has a clear fix. (Good news first: unlike many neighbours, Ukrainian speakers keep final consonants voiced and have a natural /h/, so "bag" and "happy" come out right.)
The big ones. 1) Missing articles — the biggest: "I am doctor", "I bought car" → "a doctor", "a car". 2) "I feel myself good" (почуваюся) → "I feel good". 3) "How do you think?" → "What do you think?"; "I am agree" → "I agree". 4) False friends: "magazine" (магазин = shop), "actual" (актуальний = relevant, topical), "sympathetic" (симпатичний = good-looking, nice), "intelligent" (інтелігентний = cultured), "accurate" (акуратний = neat), "fabric" (фабрика = factory), "decade" (декада = ten days), "data" (дата = date). 5) Learn vs teach (вчити covers both): "he learned me" → "he taught me"; borrow vs lend (позичати): you borrow, they lend. 6) "On the picture", "at Monday" → "in the picture", "on Monday". 7) Present for present perfect: "I work here since 2020" → "I've worked here since 2020". 8) Questions without inversion and double negatives: "You like it?" → "Do you like it?"; "I didn't see nobody" → "anybody". 9) "Possibility" for "opportunity": "a great possibility to travel" → "opportunity"; "explain me" → "explain to me". 10) Sounds: /w/ as /v/ ("vater"), "th" as /s/, /z/, /t/ or /d/ ("sink", "zis"), and "bad" vs "bed" — open wider for "bad".
A list won't fix these; making them out loud and being corrected in the moment will. Airi is built for that: she hears the pattern, fixes the one mistake that matters in her reply, and keeps the conversation going. Speak with her daily and these stop being habits within a few weeks.
