Talk to an AI in English
Typing to a chatbot doesn't help you speak. To improve spoken English you need to actually talk — with your voice — and hear a natural voice reply, in real time, the way a real conversation works.
Airi is exactly that: a voice AI you talk to out loud. You speak, she listens, and she answers in a warm, natural voice within a couple of seconds, with an animated character on screen. She understands you even if your grammar isn't perfect, fixes small mistakes without stopping the conversation, and remembers you between chats. It's the closest thing to having a patient friend who is always free to talk.
A quick example with Airi
Can you talk to an AI in English? Yes, and here is what you need
You need a web browser, a working microphone, and a few minutes somewhere you can speak at normal volume. A headset helps if the room is noisy. There is nothing to book: a voice AI is available at any hour.
The first time, your browser will ask whether the site may use your microphone. That prompt is standard: Mozilla's MDN Web Docs state that a browser must get your permission before a site can open the microphone, and must ask at least the first time. Choose the option that allows it, say hello, and wait for the reply. If you block it by mistake, you can change the permission in your browser's site settings.
What you get is speaking time with a patient partner, not lessons from a teacher.
What to say when you talk to an AI in English: five opening lines
The first sentence is often the hardest, because nobody has asked you anything yet. Open with a line that tells the AI what kind of talk you want.
- "Hi, I'd like to practice my English. Can we just chat for a few minutes?"
- "Can you ask me about my day? One question at a time, please."
- "I'm a beginner, so please use simple words and short sentences."
- "I'm traveling next month. Can we practice checking in at a hotel?"
- "I want to tell you about a movie I watched. Tell me if something sounds wrong."
Each line sets a topic, a level, or a role, which is enough for an AI to begin.
Phrases for steering an AI conversation in English
A conversation goes wrong in small ways: you miss a reply, it runs too long, or it is full of words you don't know. The phrases that fix it work with people too.
| When this happens | Say this |
|---|---|
| You missed what it said | Sorry, I didn't catch that. Could you say it again? |
| The words are too hard | Could you say that in simpler words? |
| The replies are too long | Could you keep your answers short so I can talk more? |
| You can't find a word | What do you call the thing you use to open a bottle? |
| You need a moment | Give me a second. I'm thinking about how to say this. |
| You want a better version | Is there a more natural way to say that? |
Talking to an AI in English vs a tutor vs a language exchange partner
| Option | Strong at | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Voice AI | Being available at any hour, repeating a scene ten times, letting you make mistakes with nobody watching | Less reliable at judging how you sound, and there is no real listener, so less pressure |
| Human tutor | Diagnosing your particular problems, coaching pronunciation, building a plan and holding you to it | Paid by the hour, at fixed appointment times |
| Language exchange partner | Real social stakes, culture, humor, sometimes friendship | Time is usually split between the two languages, and your partner is usually not a trained teacher |
These are not rivals, and you can use more than one. Airi belongs in the first row. She does not grade your pronunciation, plan lessons, or mark exam answers; for those, a teacher is the right choice. Where an AI earns its place is volume: the many short conversations you would never book a person for.
The research is encouraging but young. A 2024 systematic review by Du and Daniel in the journal Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence examined 24 studies, published between 2017 and 2023, of AI chatbots for English speaking practice. It highlighted benefits such as easing speaking anxiety, looked at effects on learners' confidence, engagement and motivation, and described the field as still in its early stages. Treat an AI as extra speaking time, not as a guarantee of results.
Traps to avoid when you talk to an AI in English
- Assuming it heard you right. Speech recognition can mishear a word, especially in a noisy room, and the reply then answers something you did not say. When a reply seems off, say so: "That's not what I meant. I said my sister is a nurse."
- One-word answers. "Yes" and "fine" end your turn. Add a reason and an example. Asked "Do you like cooking?", say: "Yes, I do. It helps me relax after work. Last night I made chicken soup."
- Never asking a question. Real conversations go both ways. End your turn with "What about you?" or "What would you do?"
- Staying with the AI forever. It is rehearsal. Take the sentences that worked and use them with a person this week.
An eight-minute first talk with Airi in English
The free credits you get when you sign up with Google cover about eight minutes of speaking, so plan the first talk. The timings below are approximate. Airi has six personalities; pick the one you would find easiest to talk to.
- Minute 1. Say your name and why you are learning: "I'm Lina, and I need English for work calls."
- Minutes 2 to 4. Talk about one thing you know well, such as your job. Give a reason with every answer.
- Whenever a small fix appears, repeat the corrected sentence out loud.
- Minutes 5 to 7. Ask for a role-play: "Let's pretend you're a barista and I'm ordering a coffee."
- Last minute. Ask her two questions, then close: "Thanks, that was fun. Talk to you tomorrow."
When the talk ends, write down one corrected sentence and one phrase you want to keep. That note is your own record of the session, and a ready-made opening for the next one.
